I thoroughly enjoyed my career day with city councilman Chris Ward. I was very excited for the day and it did live up to my expectations. It was so cool! I was not very nervous, I just did not quite know what to expect. My mentor was such a smart person. I truly did look up to Chris Ward. This is a career that interests me. I learned so much. Chris Ward is doing it for the people and that is so exciting. He is not in it for the fame or money. He got me so involved in the day and it was so exciting to see the inside of politics. Chris is the first married gay San Diego City Councilman with a child. It was so cool to see somebody so knowledgable on many different topics. I learned that being a politician is very hectic, it seemed like something I would really like as a career.
What in your educational background most prepared you for this job? Chris got a masters in Government at Harvard. Keeping up at Harvard will prepare you for anything..
What specific skill training helped you prepare of this job? Chris was saying how being able to hop from topic to topic is the most important way to enable him to balance his job because it is very helpful. He is also trying to raise an adopted little girl.
How do you interact with other people during your work? Chris is constantly interacting with the community. He is a local celebrity but also a local hero. He aims to help the community and wants the community member to feel active in the politics of their community. Chris interacts with the homeless a lot because of the fact that his big push is to "help the homeless".
What is your favorite part of your job? Chris' favorite part of his job is being able to help the people.
Is this you typical day at work? Chris says there is no typical day at work for him. It is chaotic and always changing.
Did you always want to be a politician? Chris says he always wanted to do something in that general area revolving government but he was not sure what exactly he wanted to be.
If you could go back and give yourself advice when you first started this job what would you tell yourself? It would be to make sure you have time for your family. Chris says he is a very hard worker and he forgets about himself a lot. He forfeits meals, family events etc.
