Over the course of the semester we focused on watersheds. A watershed is an area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers, basins, or seas. The class was split into multiple teams to help Elfin Forest protect their watersheds. I was on the political team. The goal of the political team was to convince the city of Escondido to allow their water to be sampled because as of right now, they are not allowing water in their territory to be sampled. Water sampling is extremely beneficial to the living organisms in the water. The humans test the water to make sure it is safe conditions for those living organisms and if it is not safe, the humans relocate those organisms. We did not know how to go about doing this. After speaking with members of the community, we decided that the first step to change is to have the people in the community involved. There was a huge lack of knowledge about this issue as it is not one that is publicized by the media. We wanted to make a video to make people want to give in to their environment by making better choices but, we realized that would not really get out to the ordinary members of the community, So, instead we made a magazine. The magazine was all about how things you do in your everyday life can effect the environment we share with many other species. Our goal was not to make it look extremely professional and overwhelming looking but to make it something all ages could enjoy while still being aesthetically pleasing. We added coloring pages, graphs, and research. This magazine will be distributed at Elfin Forest.
